Yerdle Helps You Reduce Clutter, Get Free Stuff

By |June 2nd, 2015|Categories: Articles, Society, Tech|Tags: , , , , |

American culture is full of wasteful thinking. We consume fast food in Styrofoam containers, we buy bottled water (seriously, that’s incredibly wasteful), and we throw out perfectly good clothes if they go out of style. Most of us have heard of the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” concept, but how many of us care enough to participate? Thankfully, this movement is growing. What would you do if recycling your unwanted items became super easy? Would you actually do it? What would you do if that recycling [...]

Apple Watch – My Initial Thoughts

By |April 14th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Tech|Tags: , |

Ignorant and financially irresponsible -- those are two labels recently given to me in the eciov newsroom. The reason: I’m getting an Apple Watch. The topic is more divisive among my circle of techie friends than I anticipated. I suppose we should expect that these days. Apple is popular enough now that it warrants the extra attention and scrutiny. Words can hurt, but I’ll press on and tell you about my first experience with the Apple Watch. Before talking about my Watch appointment, I’d like to [...]

Grand Theft Auto V – Out for PC, but It’s Not for Everyone *Updated*

By |April 13th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Gaming|Tags: , , , |

*Update*  After spending an hour in the game last night, I determined it's impossible for us to maintain a reasonably professional reputation while supporting this game. I haven't played the game in almost two years, but I forgot how reprehensible the game truly is. That said, we've deleted our GTA5 livestream from Twitch and will not add more in the future. We apologize to anyone we may have offended with our previous coverage or our decision to cancel future coverage. How do I start a post abo [...]

I Don’t Believe in the Magic of Apple, but Not for the Reason You Think

By |March 10th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Tech|Tags: , , , , , , , |

This is a difficult post to write. I’m not afraid of what people will think of me. I’m not worried that it goes against the last seven years of my life. Actually, it's difficult to write this because I believe people need to know the truth about Apple, and I have to figure out how to get them to listen. I don't think the Apple Watch is stupid, or that Apple is going downhill. I don't think they'll ever make a car, but they'll definitely improve our driving experience. I'm not writing this to hur [...]

The Confession of a Chipotle Addict

By |March 6th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Food|Tags: , , , , , |

It’s 8:10 PM, and a certain foodie already ate dinner. It was a lovely seasoned chicken breast sautéed with some herbs in olive oil, coupled with a sensible and healthy side of rice and green beans. Balancing this seemingly healthy meal was a small bowl of chocolate-chip cookie dough ice cream. Okay, maybe balancing isn’t the right word. You might think this is enough to satisfy a normal 30-year-old adult male, but you’d probably be wrong. You’re overlooking a very important detail. This adult h [...]

Avengers Age of Ultron Trailer 3 – Pure Awesome

By |March 5th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Movies, Videos|Tags: , , , |

Avengers Age of Ultron – the only movie that could make more money than Star Wars in 2015 – launched its third trailer yesterday. It’s the best one to date. If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no better way to spend two minutes of your day. I proudly admit to watching it no less than a dozen times myself. Here you go: What makes this trailer so great and better than it’s predecessors? It all boils down to story. Enter Joss Whedon; he’s the mastermind behind the first Avengers movie and many ot [...]

Epic Games Makes Unreal Engine 4 Free for Everyone

By |March 3rd, 2015|Categories: Articles, Gaming, Videos|Tags: , , , , |

For almost a year now, developers have been able to use Unreal Engine 4 to create immersive worlds for us to traverse. A $19 monthly subscription gave anyone access to the engine and early access to the Unreal Tournament pre-alpha. You read that right: a pre-alpha. It's a concept we don't see very often in the gaming industry. Epic Games hopes to encourage game developers and modders to create content for the new Unreal Tournament. They call it crowdsourced development; I think it's awesome. Wit [...]

How I Use Facebook in 2015

By |March 2nd, 2015|Categories: Articles, Society|Tags: , , |

When I first signed up for Facebook in 2004, it was an invitation-only service for select colleges. My college was one of the first on the list. I thought it was an exclusive club only the cool people knew about. I guess, at that point, it was. A few years down the road, they decided to add high schools to the service. I thought it was terrible decision at the time, but it didn't really affect me, so whatever. Then the inevitable happened: they allowed everyone to join the service. It turns out [...]

Banshees Aren’t Cute

By |February 28th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Society|Tags: , , , , , |

There are many new things to experience and learn as a first-time parent. I read a ton of articles and blogs to prepare myself as much as possible, yet my infant consistently surprises me or catches me off guard. Usually, they’re cute little things that come and go, as he gets older. I take a ton of photos and videos to remember all the behavioral stages, but I'd like to forget one of them. In fact, I’m hoping to block it completely from my memory. Babies get more fun as they begin smiling and t [...]

Net Neutrality Has Nothing (and Everything) to Do with Politics

By |February 27th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Politics|Tags: , , , , , , |

Net Neutrality is back in the news thanks to a recent FCC ruling that re-classifies the internet as telecommunication services under Title II of the Communications Act. That means the FCC officially ensures open access to the internet for all Americans. Specifically, it prevents your internet service provider from degrading your experience. That's great for the consumer, but this is also great for innovation. Some politicians want you to believe otherwise, but they're just wrong... willfully so. [...]

Apple Sent Invites to March 9 Event, and I Wasn’t Invited

By |February 26th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Tech|Tags: , , , , , , , |

This morning, Apple announced an upcoming event by way of sending invitations to the party, and yours truly is not on the guest list. I’m not at all bitter about missing the event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. The affair will begin March 9 at noon here in the lovely state of Texas (10:00am Pacific, 1:00pm Eastern). I’ll probably be eating lunch or obsessively refreshing one of a hundred different liveblogs from the select few in attendance. Who knows? The invit [...]

Toyota Dropped CarPlay Support – Shoots Self in Foot

By |February 22nd, 2015|Categories: Articles, Auto, Tech|Tags: , , , |

With nearly every major auto manufacturer on the list for CarPlay integrations, I'm admittedly a little surprised that Toyota dropped CarPlay support. In a recent New York Times article, Toyota's John Hanson said, "It currently had no plans to adopt Android Auto or CarPlay in the United States." No plans? That's a mistake, right? I hope he's just saying that so Toyota can spend more time on the integration. If Apple gets CarPlay into 50% of the industry this year, I think the brands that don't a [...]

Can Smartphones Replace DSLR Cameras?

By |February 18th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Tech|

Modern smartphones are getting incredibly good at taking pictures. So good, in fact, that I recently sold my Canon 5D Mark ii and all my lenses. Amazing lenses like the Canon 85mm f/1.2L and the Canon 35mm f/1.4L. Was that kit capable of great images? You bet it was. It shoots full frame, low noise, and 21 megapixel pictures. By selling my gear, I forced myself to answer this question: can smartphones replace DSLR cameras? The answer may surprise you. See, I was a professional photographer for y [...]

Comcast Xfinity Apple TV Activation – Updated

By |February 17th, 2015|Categories: Articles, Tech, TV|Tags: , , , , , , , |

**We've added a list of apps with Comcast Xfinity Apple TV activation to the end of this post.** If you're an Apple TV user and a Comcast Xfinity subscriber, you've probably wondered why the steps to activate certain channels on the Apple TV don't work. It doesn't seem to be an issue with Apple's software. It appears that Comcast doesn't want certain channels like History, AETV, Lifetime, etc. available to Apple TV users. Comcast is actually dense enough to make this a difficult process without [...]

SNL 40 was Awesome – You Should Watch It

By |February 15th, 2015|Categories: Articles, TV|Tags: , , |

SNL 40 was one of my most anticipated television events of the last month. I'm excited to say that the show was epic on all levels. Minus a few directorial snafus, the show had an amazing mix of old and new cast members, popular hosts, and musical guests. I've been a fan of the show forever. I haven't been around for all 40 years, but I've seen almost every episode thanks to the invention of reruns. If you were wondering about the 3.5-hour length, it's worth every minute if you're a fan of Satur [...]
